Dramatic stylization
Lot 2392
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. Aureus (Gold, 20 mm, 6.29 g, 12 h), 'Derived Gordian Group C'. UONXIIVOU OVUTI (read outwardly and counterclockwise) Laureate imperial head to left. Rev. OIIXIVI[...]IV (read outwardly and counterclockwise) Female figure advancing right, holding stylized cornucopiae in left right hand and uncertain object in her right. A beautifully stylized and attractive piece. Some minor scratches and with traces of mounting on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

Close comparison of this beautiful coin with lot 2391 above (and Aurum Barbarorum II, 1883) reveals that this is what it was modelled after. The dies are noteworthy not just for their dramatic stylization, but also for their carefully crafted but meaningless fantasy legends.
